Welcome to draft-magazine.com, a new digital platform that illustrates the diverse breadth of student study and activity on our Interior programmes. During this unprecedented time of challenges faced through the disruption of COVID-19, we seized the opportunity to develop our annual edition of DRAFT into an expanded online version. In doing so we have been able to capture and showcase more extensive detail of the design projects executed by our students across all programme levels.

At this time of the year we usually celebrate the achievements of graduating students through our annual Degree Show. Although it has not been possible to hold a physical show again this year you will still be able to see how extremely well prepared our graduates are for professional practice by viewing their individual portfolios in the ‘Graduates 2021’ link or on the BA programme pages.

At Middlesex we run two undergraduate programmes dedicated to studying the richly variant inscape. BA Interior Design and BA Interior Architecture both share the same learning modules for the first half of the programme. But in the second half, study is more closely aligned with the distinctive focus that differentiates the two, as illustrated here.

At post graduate level, you will see work in progress from MA Interiors (Architecture + Design) that continues to challenge and redefine what constitutes the ‘interior’. The programme places emphasis on processing a personal design approach, based on individual interests, through the compilation of three portfolio volumes of analysis and project development.

Common to all three programmes is the importance we place on intertwining theory and practice and the obligation, in this social media age, to prioritise real sensory human experience in the place making process. The pertinence of the latter is currently particularly resonant, of course, due to the influence the pandemic is having on all of our lives.

Although student achievement is predominantly assessed against individually produced outputs, we acknowledge that designing interiors in practice is inevitably interdisciplinary, often crossing the domains of humanities, cultural studies, history, philosophy, psychology and anthropology. We therefore take every opportunity to instil collaborative discourse and inclusivity across all levels of study. We hope that you will find all of these core values evidenced in the work illustrated and we are delighted to share the successful outcomes of our programmes with you.

As another untypical year draws to a close, I would like to thank our amazing academic, technical and administrative team for their dedication and commitment to the programmes and, in particular, for ensuring the efficient and successful transition to online study during the pandemic. But most importantly, congratulations to our wonderful new graduates for their achievements during this unique and difficult time. We wish you all the very best for your onward journey and future success.
